The Warren Co. Board of Commissioners voted to remove the resolution at Tuesday night’s meeting to reject the passage of school superintendents. Education Commissioner Carlene Brown made the motion to remove it saying more discussion is needed. Director of Schools Grant Swallows, while giving his report, said it’s been a challenging for teachers and educators and encouraged them to thank an educator. Swallows talked about a new funding formula called the TISA, or Tennessee investment in Student Achievement, that will most likely take effect in the 2023-2024 school year. He added more and more comes from the Tennessee General Assembly. He was emotional saying it gets frustrating saying the work going on by teachers and educators in order for students to learn in Warren Co. the way they know best should not be taking place on the floor of the General Assembly in Nashville. Swallows asks for commissioners in joining him in advocating and educating Warren Co. students the way they know possible. It will be discussed further at the March monthly meeting.
In other business, the board accepted a donation of 33,634 dollars for animal control to be used to repair concrete and to provide extra kennels due to overpopulation. An extra 100,000 dollars was approved for fuel at the airport due to rising gas prices. The board also passed a resolution naming the bridge that crosses the Collins River on Highway 127 the Staff Sergeant Wilbur Leon Green Bridge. Green was killed on his second tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969.
